Charles County Back Yard Renovation
This Charles County, MD project was a total redesign of the rear yard. It posed interesting challenges in scheduling multiple trades, solving tricky drainage issues, and working around a busy family’s entertaining schedule.
My design allowed for the existing pool and patio to remain. A graceful arbor transforms the space and creates another entertaining area. Custom-built storage cabinets double as serving surfaces for large outdoor parties. The back yard had an existing pool and pool patio, but the layout didn’t work for the way the family wanted to use the space.
A second challenge was a huge blank house wall that reinforced the unconnected, “no-man’s-land” feel the back yard had. I chose this area for the client’s outdoor kitchen for its proximity to the large rear porch and easy access from the driveway for guests with kids.
The outdoor kitchen includes a custom-built stone grill cabinet that provides plenty of counter space and storage. The pergola brings down the height of the house wall, creating the sense of an outdoor room, while keeping the space open and airy.
The finished outdoor kitchen creates a complete flow from the brick porch to the pool area and unifies the space. It includes all of the comforts of home with a sink, grill, side burners, and outdoor refrigerator. To the right of the image is a stone fire pit, ready for marshmallows.
The gas fire pit overlooks the pool area. Easy to light and maintain, the fire pit extends the outdoor dining season.
